Free Schools are publicly funded, independently governed schools. Each Free School has a sponsor. The sponsor for The Hawthorne’s is ‘Great Schools for All Children’ a charitable company incorporated to oversee the academies it sponsors. The sponsor has a master funding agreement with the Secretary of State for Education. Each school within the multi-academy trust also has an individual supplementary funding agreement with the parent trust.
‘Great Schools for All Children’ is the legally responsible governing body for all academies in its network. In practice, the Great Schools for All Children board delegates most relevant governance functions to The Hawthorne’s Local Governing Body (LGB). This means that, unlike most maintained governing bodies, the LGB has no statutory responsibilities. This allows governors to concentrate on educational strategy, school outcomes and aspiration.
The Hawthorne’s LGB is made up as follows:
- Up to nine members are appointed by Great Schools for All Children, including the Chair, who are committed to supporting the school. Each appointed member will have a specific area of expertise that will help further develop the school
- The Hawthorne’s Headteacher
- One elected teacher governor
- One elected non-teaching governor
- Two parent governor
- Up to two more governors may be appointed to the LGB for limited periods when specific expertise is needed
Governors are appointed/elected for two-year terms, up to a maximum of ten years. Free School staff may not be Chair or Vice Chair of the LGB.
Great Schools for All Children aims to create a balanced group that will have the right skills, connections and dynamic for the LGB to work well and support the school in achieving exceptional performance:
The LGB meets four times per year.
